Two Italian artists have spent the month of October in London, working on the topic London is Open. They will unveil their projects in two events on 1 November 2018 at the Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art and on 3 November 2018 in a private flat in Chelsea. The artists, Alberto Gianfreda and Alex Urso, have been in London within the Art Residency – London is Open, hosted by Art Apartments. The theme of the residency is inspired by the campaign launched by London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan and it is particularly significant now that the UK is at final stage of negotiations with the EU before Brexit.
Alex Urso is an artist who lives and works in Warsaw, Poland. During his art residency, he has been working on two projects. Firstly, he has created a drape combining the Refugee Nation flag and the Greater London flag. In the second part of the residency he has focused on a performative action involving London’s citizens. He has knocked at Londoners’ doors asking them to swap their doormats with new ones with the simple sentence “Welcome.” Accepting to exchange the doormats, each house-owner agreed to embrace the idea of London as an open and welcoming place. The final result is a mosaic of doormats representing Londoners’ willingness to be or not to be open.
Alberto Gianfreda is a sculptor and a professor of Sculpture Techniques at Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. In his work during the residency he has developed the theme of the fragment and its reconstruction. During his exploration of London, he has put together a group of vases from different areas and different shapes. The vases are fragmented and recomposed as sculptures, generating new and unique elements, metaphor of the integration of differences.
The project is completed with the recording of the drammatic sound of the moving fragments, which in the viewer’s experience anticipates and contrasts the physical presence of the art works.
